Fans of the silent film star will be keen to know about a lifetime’s visit, as there was a 12-year waiting list to play in the course
Why did Charlie Chaplin go to this resort every year?
You could hardly fault Charlie Chaplin’s golf outings. Just 3 October 1938 was the star’s 27th year going to Waterville Golf Club to play a round. (Each year a year-long waiting list to join the course filled the town’s 45,000 people within days.)
Chaplin is said to have set up his own business up the road, Pinney’s, but it is rumoured he spent much of his time at this resort – where he sipped fizzy cola, sampled those sweet and savoury treats on the menu and partied till dawn – during the latter part of his life. It is also said he designed the course himself.
• Waterville Golf Club runs until 16 October and costs £1,020 for a two-night stay for an adult, plus £1,290 for each additional child under 18. A one-week rental of the house where Chaplin lived in the town is £5,800 (adult) and £4,700 (child). For details, go to visitwaterville.co.uk.
